How Mavlers Agency earned citations in 93% of tracked buying prompts across ChatGPT and Gemini, and what we learned along the way.
Products / Services Used
If you run an agency, you know the old game. Build links, rank on Google, collect the traffic. That game still works. But a second one has opened next to it.
More buyers now ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google’s AI features which agency to hire. They get a shortlist before they open a results page. If your brand is not in that answer, those buyers never see you, however well your site ranks.

How agency buyers shortlist, then and now
Before we sold this to anyone, we ran it on ourselves. This is that story, with the mistakes left in. The numbers and screenshots are real. Most of the lessons came from things that did not work.

The five steps, April to August 2026
In March 2026 we split our digital marketing services into their own brand. Mavlers.com had become known for CRM work. Our white-label SEO, PPC, web design and development services needed a home with positioning that fit them.
Mavlers Agency went live in April on a new domain. The setup was deliberately ordinary:
At this stage we thought like a traditional SEO team. Every new domain has to start there.
What we did: A new domain has one obvious problem. Nobody trusts it. So we followed the playbook and built links from sites with authority of 50 or more, pointing most of that equity at the homepage and a few service pages.
What happened: Domain authority grew 160% in June and 320% by July. Traffic did not follow. Organic sessions fell 33% in June while we kept earning links.

What we learned: Building authority and building visibility were no longer the same thing. While reviewing competitors, we saw pages in Google’s top 10 that were not pulling the traffic a top-10 spot used to bring. Buyers were asking an AI tool first, getting a shortlist, and visiting websites afterwards, if at all.
The question changed. It was no longer “how do we rank?” It was “how does an agency become a source AI tools can find, understand and recommend?” That moved our work from traditional SEO toward answer engine and generative engine optimization (AEO and GEO).
What we did: AI tools pull answers from articles that list and compare agencies. So getting into the right lists should get us into the answers. We asked publishers of ranking listicles to add us. Few wanted to update old articles for a brand nobody knew. So we wrote listicle-style guest posts ourselves and placed Mavlers Agency in them.
What happened: We counted the mentions. 10% were us. 90% went to competitors. Every post we wrote promoted nine other agencies next to ours. We were making the whole category look good, not Mavlers Agency.

What we learned: A mention is not authority.
What we did: We stopped asking where we could get a link or a mention. We started asking where Mavlers Agency could contribute something useful as an expert. We picked five topics we handle every day for clients and decided to own them

The goal was no longer to be mentioned somewhere. It was to be the source an AI tool points to when someone asks a question in this space.
What changed internally: SEO, content and PR stopped being three separate jobs. They became one visibility goal.
What we did: We built a tracker of real buying questions, the kind our ideal client types into an AI tool. We measured citations and brand mentions across engines, markets and repeated runs, alongside GA4 and Search Console data.
Why it matters: AI answers change from run to run. A single screenshot proves nothing. Patterns across runs do.

Over the same months, organic sessions grew 92% and links earned rose 119%.

Citations run well ahead of name mentions. AI tools use our pages as a source even when the answer does not name us.

Here is what that looks like inside the answers:

One honest caveat. AI answers are not consistent. In the same summer, one engine cited our page, another named us without citing, and a third did neither. Ask twice and you can get two different lists. That is why we track patterns across runs, engines and markets, and never judge on one screenshot.
The point was never a score. It was whether the right buyers showed up.

The May base was small, since lead tracking started on May 12. Read the growth rates with that in mind.
The direct link. Over 40% of the leads that came straight from ChatGPT or Gemini were agencies. That counts only what we can trace. Much of AI’s influence shows up later as a branded search or a typed URL, which no tool credits to a chatbot.
This is the same program we run for partner agencies, under their brand.
