AI visibility audit findings from 50 agency websites

    TL;DR

    • Mavlers Agency ran an AI search visibility audit on 50 agency websites across the US, UK, and Australia in Q1 2026.
    • 43 of 50 had no presence in ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google AI Overviews for their core service category.
    • The gap is not agency size or authority. It comes down to structure: entity consistency, valid schema, and question-led content.
    • Only 3 agencies had built AI search readiness on purpose, and none of them published an unusual amount of content to get there.

Most agency websites are invisible in AI search, including plenty that rank well on Google. In an AI search visibility audit of 50 agency websites across the US, UK, and Australia, Mavlers Agency found that 43 had no meaningful presence in ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google AI Overviews for their core service category. That is the short answer to why a prospect can ask an AI assistant who to hire and never see your name, even if your site sits on page one of Google.

This piece walks through the full agency AI search visibility audit: the 6 areas we tested, the mistakes that recurred across nearly every site, and what the 3 agencies that were cited did differently. If you run an agency and want to know where your own site would land, the framework below is the same one we used.

How many agency websites appeared in ChatGPT or Google AI Overviews in our audit?

Of the 50 agencies we audited, 43 did not appear in AI-generated answers for prompts like "best white label SEO agency for US marketing firms" or "top digital agency for Shopify brands in Australia." Their competitors did, including several agencies with a fraction of their revenue and headcount.

7 agencies had some AI search presence. 3 out of those 7 built it deliberately, through consistent entity data and working schema. 4 had it by accident, because parts of their existing content happened to be extractable. None of the 50 walked into this with a documented agency AI search visibility strategy.

What does an AI search visibility audit include?

An AI search visibility audit is not the same review as a standard SEO audit. It checks whether AI systems can verify who you are and extract your content with confidence, not only whether you rank. We ran this audit in Q1 2026, testing all 50 agency sites against six criteria, using the same query set across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews.

Audit area What we checked Pass rate Why it matters
Entity presence Consistent business description across Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, Crunchbase, directories
    18%
AI systems verify entities before citing
Schema markup Organization, FAQ, Service, and speakable schema, validated (not just present)
    12%
Aids AI crawler parsing, not a citation guarantee
Content citability Whether content answers specific questions directly and completely enough to be cited
    30%
Citable content gets cited; broad content does not
AI platform presence Appearance in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews for core service queries
    14%
    Where buyers increasingly research first
Topical authority Whether the site has comprehensive coverage of its core service areas
    24%
    AI systems favor comprehensive sources
Brand sentiment How AI systems describe the agency when queried about it directly
    38%
AI shapes perception before the click

Pass rate = share of the 50 audited agencies with adequate coverage in each area. Most agencies failed three or more categories.

Most agencies failed 3 or more of the 6 categories. Entity presence and schema were the two areas that separated the 7 visible agencies from the other 43.

One caveat on schema specifically: Google fully retired FAQ rich results from Google Search on May 7, 2026, closing out even the narrow government-and-health-site exception it had kept since 2023. Google's own AI Overviews documentation also states that AI features require no special schema markup. The validated schema still helps AI crawlers parse a page cleanly and serves as an entity-clarity signal, but it belongs in the hygiene column now, not the guaranteed-citation column.

What signals do AI search engines use to evaluate websites?

AI systems rarely take a single claim at face value. Before citing a business, most cross-reference how it is described across Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, Crunchbase, industry directories, and press mentions. When those sources disagree, many engines skip the citation rather than resolve the conflict themselves.

Only 18% of the agencies we audited had a consistent, complete entity presence across those platforms. One agency had 4 different descriptions of its core offering across four listings. Several had no Google Business Profile at all, despite operating for over a decade.

What are the biggest AI search optimization mistakes agencies make?

The following 3 mistakes showed up across nearly every agency we audited, regardless of size or market.

    1. Missing or invalid schema. Only 12% of agencies had schema markup that actually validated. A 2026 Ahrefs study tracking 1,885 pages that added schema found no major increase in AI citations from schema alone, but a validated Organization, FAQ, and Service schema is still the entity-verification signal AI systems check before trusting a claim. Skipping it means asking to be trusted on faith.
    1. Keyword-led content instead of question-led content. Most agency content is written to rank for a phrase and earn a click. AI systems extract differently: they look for direct, complete answers to specific questions. Only 30% of the sites we audited had content that met that bar.
    1. Volume without structure. None of the agencies furthest behind were short on content. They had blogs, case studies, and service pages. What they lacked was content built to be lifted out and cited without losing meaning.

How can agencies improve AI visibility without publishing more content?

As discussed earlier, 3 of the 50 agencies had meaningful, intentional AI search visibility, and none had an unusual volume of content. One had fewer than 30 blog posts in total. What they had instead was an identical business description across at least six external platforms, FAQ schema on every core service page, and every published post built to answer one question completely.

The lesson holds for lean content teams. Fixing entity consistency and adding validated schema to 5 or 6 existing pages will move an agency further than 10 new blog posts with neither.

This also changes how agencies should pitch agency AI search readiness internally. It is a structural project before it is a content project. A content calendar without entity and schema fixes underneath it will not move the pass rate.

Why is my website ranking in Google but missing from AI answers?

Google rankings and AI citations run on different logic. Google AI Overviews still draw heavily on the existing organic index, so ranking well there helps. ChatGPT and Perplexity do not work the same way. Independent research published in 2026 found that only around 11% of domains cited by ChatGPT are also cited by Perplexity for comparable queries.

Platform behavior also varies in how often citations point back to a brand's own domain rather than to a third party. Google AI Overviews favors brand-owned domains far more than either chatbot does, which is one reason a site can rank well on Google and still go unmentioned in ChatGPT.

Each platform favors different source types for different reasons. Treating "AI search" as a single target instead of three separate ones is one of the most common reasons a well-ranked agency site still gets skipped.

How do I audit my website for AI search visibility?

    Here is a simple website AI visibility audit that agencies can run on a preliminary basis;

    1. Query ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews with the 10 questions your best prospects would ask. Note who gets cited and who does not.
    1. Check your business description across Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, Crunchbase, and any directory you're listed on. Make the language identical everywhere.
    1. Run your core service pages through a schema validator, not just a check for whether schema exists at all.
    1. Pick 5 questions your prospects actually ask and confirm each has a page that answers it directly, in under 150 words, without requiring the rest of the page for context.
    1. Re-run the same 10 queries every quarter. Citation patterns shift fast, and a one-time audit goes stale within months.

    Frequently asked questions

Does schema markup guarantee my agency will get cited by AI platforms?

No. A 2026 study tracking nearly 5,000 pages that added schema found no significant increase in citations from schema alone. It works alongside entity consistency and citable content, not as a standalone fix.

How long does it take to see results after an AI search visibility audit?

Entity and schema fixes can show up in citations within weeks, since they change how quickly AI systems verify claims. Content-driven gains usually take a full indexing cycle, often two to three months.

Which AI platform should agencies prioritize first?

It depends on the buyer. Perplexity indexes new content within hours and favors community sources; ChatGPT leans on established editorial sources, and Google AI Overviews still favors brand-owned domains. Audit all three before assuming one matters more.

Is AI search visibility replacing traditional SEO for agencies?

No, it sits alongside it. Ranking well in Google still feeds into Google AI Overviews, and technical SEO fundamentals like crawlability remain the floor on which AI visibility is built.
