About

The client is a Shopify store, not on Plus, that had moved to the new checkout and thank-you pages. On 26 August 2026, Shopify stopped running scripts in the old 'additional scripts' box on all non-Plus stores. For most stores, that is where the purchase tracking lived. It stopped silently: no error, no email, no platform alert. Orders kept arriving. Dashboards kept loading. The gap only showed up when someone compared Google Ads against Shopify.

Challenges

  • Shopify's 26 August 2026 change silently switched off the 'additional scripts' box on every non-Plus store, taking purchase tracking down without any error.
  • Orders kept arriving and dashboards kept loading, so no platform raised a flag. The break only surfaced when Google Ads was compared against Shopify orders.
  • The first attempt at the new-way install reported the container as 'not connected'.
  • Once connected, GA4 was recording the pixel's own sandbox paths instead of real page URLs, which would have broken every page-level report.
  • The customer-events pixel runs in a sandbox, so Google's click IDs (gclid, gbraid, wbraid) were not reaching the conversion tag on their own.
  • Peak season was approaching, with Black Friday and Christmas budgets about to be set on broken data.

Goals

  • Reinstall the tag manager the way Shopify now supports: through a customer-events custom pixel.
  • Restore the full purchase funnel in GA4 and Google Ads, with value and currency.
  • Capture Google's click IDs inside the sandbox so every order is matched back to the click that caused it.
  • Enable enhanced conversions with hashed customer data to raise the share of orders Google can attribute.
  • Make GA4 record real page URLs, not the pixel's internal sandbox paths.
  • Set up daily monitoring so the next silent platform change is caught in a day, not at month-end.

Solution/Approach

  • Confirmed the gap by comparing Google Ads conversions with Shopify orders for one week.
  • Installed the tag manager through a Shopify customer-events custom pixel, the supported install for non-Plus stores.
  • Fired the full purchase funnel from the pixel: product views, add to cart, checkout steps, and purchase with value and currency.
  • Captured Google's click IDs (gclid, gbraid, wbraid) inside the sandbox and stored them on every order.
  • Enabled enhanced conversions by sending hashed customer data with each purchase event.
  • Rewrote the page paths GA4 was recording so reports show real URLs, not sandbox paths.
  • Verified every event on live orders before handover.
  • Set up a daily GA4-to-Shopify order comparison so the next silent break surfaces in a day.

Results

  • All four purchase funnel events (product view, add to cart, checkout steps, purchase with value) now flow to GA4 and Google Ads.
  • All three Google click IDs (gclid, gbraid, wbraid) carried on every order, up from zero.
  • Enhanced conversions active, raising the share of orders Google can attribute to a click.
  • Real page URLs restored in GA4, replacing the pixel's internal sandbox paths across every page-level report.
  • Smart Bidding now optimizes on real purchase data again, not an inflated or missing signal.
  • Daily GA4-to-Shopify comparison is in place, so the next silent platform change is a one-day problem, not a one-quarter problem.
